I was just reading this article about soda. The article, written by David Gutierrez, said that soda has recently been linked to pancreatic cancer. Well, we all knew soda wasn’t the healthiest thing on the market, especially diet soda filled with aspartame, but who knew it was THAT bad for us?!
Studies conducted by researchers at the University of Minnesota showed that drinking more than one soda per week (that’s not even that often compared to a lot of people who consume up to three a day!) may considerably increase your risk of pancreatic cancer.
Lead researcher Mark Pereira was quoted saying, “The high levels of sugar in soft drinks may be increasing the level of insulin in the body, which we think contributed to pancreatic cancer cell growth.” Research was conducted for 14 years on 60,524 adults. Studies found that participants who drank two or more sodas per week were 87% (that’s a hell of a lot) more likely to develop pancreatic cancer than those who consumed soft drinks less frequently.
Consuming excessive sugar can cause damage to the pancreas, which produces the sugar-regulating hormone insulin. Some researchers even believe that sugar can hasten the growth of tumors.
Pancreatic cancer is one of the most lethal forms of cancer, with a mere 5-year survival rate of only 5%. In the U.S. alone, an estimated 38,000 people are diagnosed with the disease each year and 34,000 are killed by it.
So basically why would you continue to drink soda if it’s going to increase your chances of pancreatic cancer – the most deadly form of cancer – by 87%. Granted, researchers said that there could have been other contributing factors such as smoking and the consumption of red meat, but still. 87%, to me those aren’t good numbers to compete with.
Do yourself a favor and substitute your high-fructose corn syrup-filled soda with some natural juice. You’ll be doing your body a HUGE favor.
Your body will thank you.
